Vasectomy Bruising Swelling

Gynecomastia, excess growth of glandular breast tissue in males, is a common condition in teens as they go through puberty that usually corrects itself. The growth of male breast tissue can be caused by a hormonal imbalance, certain medications, and excessive use of alcohol or marijuana, but often the cause is unknown.

Pseudo gynecomastia is an overgrowth of adipose tissue (fat) in the chest area causing “man boobs” to appear. Diet and exercise can decrease the amount of adipose tissue which can help to reduce it without surgery. Unfortunately, diet and exercise will not reduce glandular breast tissue and if the condition doesn’t correct itself within a year, it most likely won’t go away on its own. Surgery is not medically required for those with gynecomastia; however, if the condition is causing emotional distress then surgery may be needed.

The surgery involves the removal of glandular tissue and adipose tissue in the breast area. The areola and nipples may also need to be reduced. A small incision is made and the glandular tissue is removed. This procedure has a fairly quick and painless recovery. Liposuction can be used for pseudo gynecomastia to remove the adipose tissue. This involves a small incision for the cannula to be inserted and the surgeon spends an hour or more removing fat from the chest. This procedure causes bruising that can be uncomfortable for a few days.

After surgery you can shower the next day, but tub baths should be avoided for a week. It is possible to return to work in 1-3 days after male breast reduction surgery (mattering on how strenuous of work you do). You should try to take it easy with your workouts in the gym for a couple weeks, especially with exercises involving the upper body and pecs. Most men are pleased with the results even before the swelling goes down. Patients report feeling less self conscious and an increase of confidence usually occurs. For many, male breast reduction surgery enhances their life by taking their breasts out of every day decisions including activities and clothing. This can be an effective but costly solution, so exploring options to get rid of it naturally should be further investigated before opting for this kind of surgery.

Some people need to be careful to keep gynecomastia from returning. If the condition is caused by an increase of fat in the chest area, weight gain can cause it to return. It is also possible for the condition to return if it was caused by medication or hormonal imbalances if those conditions have not been taken care of. In most cases the cause is unknown and it does not return after surgery.

Insurance doesn’t usually cover this type of surgery because it is considered to be a cosmetic surgery. This type of surgery can cost several thousand dollars. In some cases surgery may be covered so you should contact your insurance company prior to having any surgical procedures done to see what is and is not covered by your policy.
