Vasectomy Testing

Sperm donation is not new and has been used for over a hundred years as a form of assisted conception therapy. Approximately 40% of infertility is caused by male factors such as low sperm count, anomalies in sperm motility, and abnormalities in sperm morphology. While many of these conditions can be treated, doctors may recommend sperm donation if the female partner is fertile and healthy.

Fertility doctors may recommend sperm donation if: The male partner has no sperm or very poor sperm. The most common group seeking donor sperm suffer from irreversible male infertility factor. This group includes the inability to ejaculate normally, damage to the testicles from cancer treatments, and vasectomy. A donor program may be suggested if other therapies such as ICSI, surgical sperm retrieval and rectal electroejaculation procedures are too costly or cannot be used. The male partner has an inherited disease, such as muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis or hemophilia. While preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) can test for hundreds of diseases, the cost is prohibitive for many couples. Antenatal fetal diagnosis can also detect a number of these conditions, however, many couples do not wish to terminate a pregnancy.

The male partner is Rh positive, and the female partner is Rhesus (Rh) sensitized, there is severe rhesus incompatibility. Your fertility doctor may suggest a donor program as the best option. The male partner has an incurable sexually transmitted disease (STD). Incurable STDs include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papilloma virus (HPV), and hepatitis B.

Donor sperm is utilized in one of two ways: donor insemination (DI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Couples considering either option should be thoroughly counseled and educated as to the moral, psychological, and legal implications surrounding donor sperm programs.
