Vasectomy Vs Tubes Tied

How many times have you heard the story of a woman who has had her tubes tied thinking that she has had her last child only to change her mind later? Thankfully, getting a tubal reversal after having tied your tubes is actually a pretty successful treatment. Let’s talk about the chances of getting pregnant after tubal ligation reversal.

Women have their tubes tied for a variety of reasons. Often, however, they choose to have this procedure reversed because they get married a second time, they lose a child or for a host of other reasons. While many people are very aware of the procedure of permanent birth control, not everyone knows it is possible to reverse that sterilization procedure.

Just as a man can have a vasectomy reversal, a tubal reversal is a strong possibility for a woman who has changed her mind and does want to have another child. It is typically a one-hour outpatient surgery which is fairly low in cost. Some doctors mistakenly believe that in vitro fertilization would be required for a woman who wants to have a child after having her tubes tied. However, this is not necessarily the case as often a tubal reversal surgery will do the trick.

Recently, a study was done which looked at over 5000 women who had had tubal ligation reversal procedures at the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. One thing that was noted in this study was that as age increased, the percentage of pregnancies which resulted in births went down. In other words, there were more miscarriages as a woman aged. In addition, the the overall ectopic pregnancy rate was higher than that found in the general population because of the tubal ligation procedure these women had previously.

As far as the chances of getting pregnant after tubal ligation reversal, the success rate was partly dependent upon the method of the original tubal ligation. Those that were done using tubal clips had the best outcome with a pregnancy rate of 75%. Second to that were those who had tubal rings which resulted in a 72% success rate. Women who had longer tubes left after surgery had better chances of getting pregnant than women with shorter tubes.
